This autumn, Georgia will be the guest country at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. Before reaching western Europe, Georgian books need to cross the Black Sea and pass through the old Iron Curtain, carrying a considerable amount of cultural history with them along the way. Georgia is a small yet great country that has managed to retain and cultivate its language, its script and its traditions – even under Stalin. This event, held to coincide with the translation workshop, gives a sneak preview of the major literary event coming up this autumn. Translator Sibylla Heinze, previous winner of the Georgian Translation Prize SABA, has translated works by Ana Kordzaia-Samadashvili, who in turn translates from German into Georgian. Her list of publications includes translations of works by Cornelia Funke, Elfriede Jelinek and Ingeborg Bachmann. This evening is about her books and about a very special kind of cultural transfer.
