Naira Gelashvili is one of the most important literary voices in Georgia. The writer, literary critic, civil rights activist and translator of R.M. Rilke, Hölderlin and Celan is very popular in Georgia thanks to her non-conformist prose. This novel was initially published in the literary magazine in 1982 and caused a great stir. Today as then, the text can be read as a poetic form of the criticism of totalitarian regimes, but at the same time - what is surprising - as just a story of the demands of the working world – and how to escape from them.
