Shota Rustaveli’s The Knight in the Panther's Skin is Georgia’s national epic and has been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register since 2013. It is a remarkable work in many respects: Written around the beginning of the 13th century and therefore approximately 800 years after the emergence of Georgian as a written language, it marks a sharp breaking away from the theologically based literature determined by Orthodox Christianity that had dominated the Old Georgian period until then. Since the late 19th century, there have been numerous attempts to translate the poem into other languages, including German.
At the reading marathon, not only will excerpts from the poem be read in 54 languages, but illustrations from various manuscripts and printed editions will be presented digitally.
