Medea is portrayed as a controversial figure in myths and legends. In Euripides’ work, she helps Jason capture the Golden Fleece and flees from her home to Corinth with the Argonauts, where – betrayed and embittered – she later slays her own children. In the Georgian tradition, however, Medea is a royal princess of divine origin, a wise woman involved in the healing arts and arguably depicts the oldest known paradigm of an emancipated woman. The Georgian writer and dramaturg Lasha Bugadze illuminates the problem from a modern perspective in his play Antimedea.
