Georgian Program 2017

Georgia will be presented at Frankfurter Buchmesse with diverse program, including such significant events as Guest of Honour Handover Ceremony, first official press-conference, the marathon of modern Georgian authors, presentations of new translations of Georgian Classics.

Up to 15 events with different content and topics are planned to be held in the frames of Frankfurter Buchmesse during 10-15 October. Abovementioned events are organized by Georgian National Book Center and Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association, with support of Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.

The literary marathon of modern Georgian authors will be held for the first time. Various Georgian authors will take part in the marathon and present their latest German translations: Zurab Karumidze -Dagny or A Love Feast, Nestan (Nene) Kvinikadze -The Nightingales of Isfahan, Beka Adamashvili -Bestseller, Salome Benidze -The City on the Water and Lasha Bugadze -Lucrecia515.  At Frankfurter Buchmesse will be also presented new translations of Georgian classics, namely Collection of Poems by Nikoloz Baratashvili and Caucasian Novels by Grigol Robakidze.

Within the framework of Georgian program at Frankfurter Buchmesse are planned following activities: business meetings between Georgian and foreign publishers, a discussion dedicated to Georgian-German year as well as Cooperation Memorandum signing ceremony between the Georgian National Book Center and LTI Korea. 

Furthermore Juergen Boss, President of the Frankfurter Buchmesse, will officially present Georgia to international media representatives as the Guest of Honour Country of Frankfurter Buchmesse 2018.  The first presentation of the Guest of Honour Country will be led by the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia Mikheil Giorgadze and the Director of the Georgian National Book center, the head of the project of the Guest of Honour Country Medea Metreveli. Mikheil Giorgadze will discuss the importance of the project and the planned cultural program with the European leading media representatives, while Medea Metreveli will introduce to the audience the concept of the project and main messages, official website, video-animation and the literary program. At the press-conference Nino Haratischwili, a German author of Georgian origin will speak from the writer's perspectives.  

On the 15th of October, 2017 France will officially hand over the status of the Guest of Honour Country of Frankfurter Buchmesse 2018 to Georgia.  The official ceremony consists of several parts and will participate French and Georgian authors, Frederick Boyer and David Gabunia, the Guest of Honour project Directors of Georgia and France - Ms. Medea Metreveli and Mr. Paul de Synety together with the President of Frankfurter Buchmesse Mr. Juergen Boos. At the end of the ceremony Medea Metreveli – the Guest of Honour project Director will be handed over the guest scroll with the Georgian quote from the poem "The Knight in the Panther's Skin" by Shota Rustaveli.

Closing event of the the ceremony is musical performance by widely acknowledged Georgian Singer/Songwriter Katie Melua together with the Gori Women Choir.

From October 2017 presentations of Georgian literature and culture as a Guest of Honor Country in German-speaking Europe will start officially.
To gain the status of the Guest of Honor Country, negotiations emerged from 2010 year, but the official preparations started only since 2014 when the agreement between the Georgian Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia and Frankfurter Buchmesse was concluded.
